Support a New Costco at Westgate West Shopping Center

Dear Vice Mayor Kamei,

As a local resident, I am contacting you to express my strong support for Costco’s proposed new warehouse at the Westgate West Shopping Center. Costco’s plans include redeveloping the current Westgate West Shopping Center’s northern portion by replacing three buildings and a covered garden center with a new Costco warehouse. Additionally, the proposal includes new pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures – as well as new landscaping along the perimeter of the site.

The Westgate West Shopping Center is an existing commercial center that is locally and regionally accessible by multiple transport connections and is zoned for commercial uses such as Costco. The shopping center location will serve existing and future Costco members in the area – reducing travel time to other Costco warehouses. In fact, 68% of households in the immediate San Jose, Cupertino, Saratoga and Campbell areas are already Costco members.

Additionally, the proposed warehouse will offer many benefits for the City of San Jose and its residents, including:

Promoting Economic Growth: The Costco warehouse is expected to create 250 to 300 jobs that are well-paying and offer long-term career opportunities. The average wage for Costco’s San Jose locations is $29.04 per hour.

Increasing Tax Base: Costco will serve as an anchor retailer at the Westgate West Shopping Center – bolstering the city’s retail base and tax revenue.

Community Giving: Costco is committed to being an active member of the local community. Costco budgets 1% of pre-tax profits for select charitable contributions focused on children, education, and health and human services. In 2020, Costco contributed over $48 million to organizations such as United Way, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Costco Scholarship Fund, disaster relief and many other programs.

I look forward to shopping at the new conveniently located warehouse and encourage your support of Costco’s proposal.

Thank you.
